Day Old Snowman

They built him in a hurry because they knew we were going to have another warm snap. It's been the oddest winter here, just dustings of snow with only one medium-sized dumping. Jacky, our snowman friend, named by Oliver, lived for just a day and then he melted away. And so we wait for more of that white, fluffy goodness. I just know it's coming.

Beauty In The Mundane

Two giggling in the tub, one constructing instruments with rubber bands and recyclables, one preparing to leave for ballet. Happy noise fills my home. I am blessed beyond measure. Life is not perfect in this household but I am learning to focus on the charm in every little thing, the beauty in the mundane. Gratitude results in joy. I am filled to overflowing with joy these days. I'm getting it.

Wig Fitting Party

It was an appointment for my sister-in-law; she's the one who really needs the wig... but when you get a group of women in a wig shop, there's going to be some experimentation. Linda did find a great piece that was treated to suit her colouring and style and she also bought a couple of pretty hats to keep her little head warm this winter. The rest of us, on the other hand, well, we might be heading back for some other items that are of lesser necessity. For not being a colour-my-hair-much-girl, I'm now considering becoming a redhead :)

So glad Linda is spunky enough to turn her wig fitting into a party by including all of us--a memory we'll keep close for a long time.

Seven

There she stood at my bedside, the morning before her birthday, just as her brother had done.

"I'm so excited to be seven tomorrow!" Emily whispered.

"So, I suppose you're happy that seven is in the numbers?" I replied, remembering Oliver's dismay about turning five.

"Well, yes," she began, "but eight actually suits me better."

I laughed out loud and wondered how I'm going to feel about becoming forty this year. Seems there's a need to contemplate numbers in this family :)

When light dawned this morning, my newly-turned seven year-old girl bounded into my room once more, this time without whispering. She had found a loonie where she had laid her tooth under her pillow the night before and she was grinning ear to ear and hopping like a bunny. She slowed to a stop and became serious.
"But Mommy," my girl mourned, "It was my most helpfulest tooth."

"That's okay," I encouraged, "you'll have a new one to replace it in just a few weeks."

And out she bounded with more vigor than she had coming in.

Emily, your spunky and dramatic personality keeps us in stitches. You are a confident and giving girl. We love you so much! Happy Birthday, Big Girl!

Of Meniscus And Mischief

The meniscus bubble sat close to overflow and my two older girls' eyes were like saucers as they crouched low to see. Unless we investigate life and God's laws of science, we can miss so much. They felt as if they had just become privy to a miracle--and it is--all of His creation, physical and biological and spiritual. As most children do, these two gobble up all things "hands-on" but when their little siblings arrived in the kitchen, begging to be a part of the fun, well, things took a different turn. Suddenly, my kitchen floor was a small flood and soap was everywhere... but, that was part of their investigation :)

So, even if things get a little mischievous, and my response may seem as though the Caledonia dam has burst through, I know my mind's file is storing up these memories as positive ones. May we, as parents, always view our children through future eyes that look back and miss these growing up and experimental days.

Strength

We curled up with tea in the living room anticipating Mom's arrival. It was a late birthday surprise--a brunch with the sisters (and in-laws) and we were especially thankful our sister, who is fighting cancer, was well enough to join us. Our personalities are all so very different and yet we love one another fiercely.

We talked and laughed and ate more than we do in our own homes. Linda light-heartedly talked of needing a wig soon and she made us all stronger with her own strength. I silently prayed as I sat next to her at the table, thanking God for her life and the way she keeps us all laughing, no matter what the topic or where she is on her journey. One woman can walk through a fire and actually pass God's peace and hope onto others by her attitude. I learn from her heart whenever I'm in her presence.

If You Give A Mom A Cookie

It was the smell that had me at the door. I knew in a moment my New Year's Resolution to avoid sugar as much as possible was going to be checked at the door with my jacket.

We were a motley crew struggling to push arms into lab coats buttoning each other up, piling winter coats in the office and snapping on elasticized hair nets. We laughed at the sight of ourselves and followed our tour guides
into Voortman cookie factory... the largest around (shipping all over the world and the first in North America to make trans-fat free cookies--just sayin'). Since the Voortmans attend my in-laws' church, we had the privilege of treading where tours no longer tread.

Thanks, Lisa, Rob, and Mr. Voortman for your hospitality and patience with our large family. And thanks for the big box of sample cookies that we've been able to share with many friends... not to mention, I've eaten more than my share. Sadly, if you give a mom a cookie, she's going to want a whole lot more.

Five

It was the day before his birthday and he tapped my arm to wake me. As I peered over the edge of the bed, still groggy, my eyes met my boy's worried expression. "What's the matter?" I whispered.

"I don't want to be five," he whispered back.

I stroked his head as he rested it on my other arm. "Why don't you want to turn five, Babe?"

He raised his head and sniffled, "I wish five wasn't in the numbers. It's too hard to write!"

I probed some more because I sensed there was more to it than just the fact that this strange and crooked number was difficult for my son to print. He mentioned that he was scared to become like a boy he knows who is five, but I'm still not sure we got to the bottom of it.

Thankfully, come January third, that boy hopped out of bed, ready to begin a day full of surprises, balloons and plenty of attention. He proudly held out five fingers to whoever asked and mentioned to me later that being five was just fine with him :)

Oliver, you make everyone older than you in this family, happy. We love to watch you play, listen to your stories with mixed-up words, and we love your passion for justice. Happy Birthday, Big Boy!

Challenges For 2012

We used to be party animals, in that, we used to have to have grand plans for New Year's Eve. We've stood shoulder to shoulder in Times Square in a crowd of people spraying champagne, police on every corner. We've ushered in the new year and skated at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto. We've shivered amidst the throng while Colin James sang through the night in Niagara Falls. We've attended parties and thrown parties too. Now my husband and I are content to relax at home, watch the ball drop on T.V. for just the last couple of minutes, and snuggle up in bed.

What's most important to us today, is that we are intentional about how we live out each year. The choices we make each day are more crucial than which location we'll hit on that famous and final night of the year. While making New Year's Resolutions has been a habit for me, personally, in the past, I inevitably fail in my humanness to acheive them all perfectly anyway. However, the challenges the Holy Spirit urges in me, now those, are going to stick, with His help, because they lead me to become the woman I'm meant to be.

So that is why I am joining the Gentleness Challenge. It's simply demonstrating the fruits of the Spirit toward your children and, as a homeschooler who's with my children all day, it's a good thing to aim at :)

The Smell of a Good Competition

He made a scene in Toys'R'Us back when we were scanning the wall of car toys for our son. It was as though the drudgery of shopping suddenly vanished when my husband, who had spotted the very thing he adored as a child, started freaking out. With a raised voice, pointing frantically, he rapidly attempted to describe to me the sheer bliss that this double race track had afforded him. Any ideas we had previously imagined for our boy went flying out the window with all the excitement. One down, three kids to go :)

And this is how I found him on Boxing Day morning...

Deep in pieces and parts (all lined up and organized), my husband tried to prepare Oliver for the joy of what was to come, if he could only get it put together with "these terrible instructions".

I entered the room to check the progress from time to time and once I caught Terry smelling one of the cars. "What on earth are you doing?" I inquired.
"I'm smelling my childhood," he replied with a smile, "because there's just that certain burnt smell of the race."
Okay then. Apparently, boys need Daddies for a reason :)

Since then, they've raced those two cars together and one generation passed a "good competition" onto another, especially the smell.

The Gift Of Giving

We returned from our candlelight service and the kids raced to slide into jammies. Tonight, we would open our gifts as tomorrow would be a little rushed with the extended family. The fire crackling, Christmas tree lights twinkling and the final song, Silent Night, still playing through my mind, created just the right setting for our little family time.

One by one, the very full tree skirt that donned those kid-wrapped presents, began to empty as my children excitedly passed around their bedroom-found treasures to one another.

It's those faces that light up when they receive an unexpected offering of love that I'll cherish and I'm so grateful for a camera during these moments.

When those starry-eyed children finally headed off to bed, my husband and I sat and assessed how things played out. Even though our children know it's not all about the gifts and they recognize this is a celebration of Jesus' birthday, we desire that our kids grow to love the receiving less and less and gain giving hearts more and more. Remembering the night, we smiled together as we agreed that these kids do take joy in giving to one another and they're oh so gracious when being given something odd like a hair barrette or a cardboard paper towel tube from a younger sibling. We also found that sacrificial giving was going on too. As our six year-old opened up a much-loved and full Polly Pocket case that belonged to her big sister, that big sister smiled while I gasped. But it wasn't a few minutes later, that big girl opened a gift from us: a large box of second-hand Polly Pockets, passed on from an older friend. Unexpected blessings for her sacrifice, I believe.

So, while we have thoughts of possibly doing what this family does (click on the text), we are aware of how God has blessed us abundantly with children who are grateful and very loving to each other.

May you sense how His good gifts make us better givers also.

Stable Love

Every year I pull out the humble stables and the various sets of nativity figures. And every year I have to add another angel, whose wing was chipped when he flew over the cattle (and crashed into the stable), or a new baby Jesus, because his little foot was broken off with all the kid-love. Poor shepherds and gallant wise men don't fare well in this home. They're battered with use. But that's okay with me.

Our little collection of stables is growing and I pray that as small hands send angels flying and Mary and Joseph kissing, that the greatest story ever told is penetrating hearts. That's why our nativity casualties don't bother me anymore. I want my children to remember how they played with those intricate pieces and re-enacted their Saviour's birth again and again.

I Do Not Like Them, Sam-I-Am!

Breakfast this morning consisted of just what the doctor ordered (Seuss, that is). I had two very thrilled little individuals who guessed what I was up to.

How many times can you read Green Eggs and Ham? If I were to put a number to it... countless. It has such a... well, I don't know... a beautifully, exasperating quality to it :)

"Can we actually eat it, Mommy?"

I do not like them, Sam-I-am. I do not like green eggs and ham.

I think they enjoyed not liking them more than anything :)

Un-Schooling And Phone Trouble

We all crashed after the final performance of our Christmas musical and it hit us like a tons of bricks--the cold flu. Thankfully, a couple of days, besides kid coughs, and we were back on our feet. I spoke with a mom today at a homeschool group and she told me she was an unschooler. That sounded really tempting--like I would like to call myself one of those. I might be just a little proud of myself when we had a really good curriculum day, instead of feeling guilty because we weren't getting through a particular amount of pages. Alas, my eldest daughter will have nothing but the texts and structure and tests and all that good stuff :) This season, however, there has been so much baking and partying and field trips and visiting that we simply haven't forged ahead in great educational endeavours--of the textbook sort, at least. The real life kind, now that's happening at every turn. How is December for you?

Since my fingers seem to be typing a rambling post tonight, I might as well add that the phone rang furiously not long ago. I say furiously because, when you can't find it, it seems to ring like it's desperate, doesn't it? I looked in the usual places, but began to search madly and threw objects left and right in passionate determination to find the thing. All the while, it wailed it's desperate, twangy ring. When it stopped, I stood over the place from which the sound was coming. It was the Christmas tree. The circular, red mat that spread around the bottom was covered in child-wrapped gifts with at least a roll of tape stuck every which way on several of them. I had watched earlier as my children had gathered stuff from their rooms and "secretly" bound them in sparkly paper and tape. They giggled with each other and shook the ones with their own names on them.

I bent down and pushed presents aside seeking my phone, now quite curious about who had called. It was no where to be found but I recognized one box, in particular. It had held Oliver's new snow boots and he had been excited to use the empty box. Now, it was left unwrapped but latched on all sides with tape. I picked it up and shook it. It sounded kind of like a phone might be in there. I actually felt guilty as I peeled back the lid and discovered it really was my phone. I thought back to him racing by me this morning, that box in hand, saying, "Mommy, you're gonna love this one!"

Do you know, I wrapped that thing back up again? Since we have another phone downstairs, we'll be hearing that crazy sound coming from under the tree until Christmas morning. But, I will have a happy boy.

Meeting At The Castle

She called me from the dentist's office and she had that eager, yet hesitant tone to her voice that I recognized immediately. She bumbled over details of the dental visit but I was waiting for what she really called for because this friend, she knows we have twin hearts of spontaneity. Finally, she exclaimed that she was going to swing by Dundurn Castle and would we like to meet them there? I did a quick mental assessment of where we stood in terms of schoolwork, who was fully dressed--had everyone eaten? That took all of about three seconds and then I blurted, "Yes! Meet there in half an hour?" And so we did.

Another date to remember--meeting at the castle together--for this little homeschool group.

Trimming The Tree And... The Excess Of My Heart

It was right about when she hung that mess of balls together and he strung the gold beads all criss-crossy on our tree that I remembered a scene from a few years ago. Of course, they were much littler then, but somehow I cared so much more how perfect everything had to be, how each ball had it's place and how each light should be turned outward. And, when those small people had been tucked in tight under quilts, I'd go back and rearrange. Somehow, God got a hold of me, and as my children trim the tree year after year, my Lord trims the excess stuff from my heart, the stuff that keeps kids from feeling like their efforts are good enough. I see life so much clearer now.

I am thankful.

Did God Forget?

He's snuggled in his jammies on the couch, with a bowl in front of him and I bring him toast to take the "ickies" away. He's staring out the window but he says, "Mommy, did God forget to feed the poor people?"
I'm stopped in my tracks and I search for words. He's still deep in thought but finally turns his eyes toward me.

"No, Babe," I reply, "God didn't forget. He loves people so very much. He has asked us to take care of the poor people. It's a command to us and we actually can't please God if we don't." (James 1:27)

He turns away again and is quiet. I stand waiting for the next profound thought. Finally, he responds, "Then why am I the only one giving to them!?" Oh, precious kid! He can't understand why there is still poverty if people are really giving. He certainly knows he's giving! He's purging his toys and things constantly and telling me he wants to share them with the poor people. I assure him that I know many, many other children and adults who are taking care of the less fortunate and he's still looking at me with wonder in his eyes. I silently pray that my boy finds his calling in caring for the needy. God places these passions in our hearts while we're young.

I stroll out of the room and reassess my own giving. Am I sharing, loving, giving what is required of me--not what is required of my friend and neighbour, but of me? When so many intelligent but misinformed people are blaming God for forgetting the needs of this world, how am I contributing to that notion? As Christians, we must share His love by providing for the basic needs of others. My son understands this well because I've trained him to think this way, but I need to be sure my words match my actions. May the world see that God has not forgotten His people because I am obeying His command to care for them. I am His hands and feet.

Capturing A History Of Faithfulness

I find my way to an aisle seat for a good view of the platform, and I plop my camera bag on the next chair. I search the familiar faces, nod and smile, and commence photographing the faithful congregation of Stoney Creek Community Church. I'd done this same thing before, in celebration of their twentieth, and here I am again, rejoicing alongside of my childhood friend, at her little church.

It all began with just four of them, Pastor and Mrs. Clarke, my friend and her sister. They left a prestigious life behind to embrace the call to the ministry in another province. Many times they struggled through hardships no pastor ever wants to encounter, but here we all are at twenty-five years, praising God for His faithfulness.

I have vested interest here. You see, when I was a teenager, and times were tough, it was this couple that wrapped their arms around me in their living room and prayed over me. It was their daughter, who remained my friend over the years, us having babies together and celebrating milestones. And so, as I travel the sanctuary, focusing and clicking the shutter button, I'm capturing not only faces, but saints who have persevered and designed a welcoming place for the weary life-travellers of this city. I watch as person after person step forward to share how they've been changed here and loved--I too, am silently one of them. We know that the Lord is first and foremost in this haven.

With an ear to the pulpit, I float quietly about the room, as they had asked--an invisible historian. The congregation laughs, I see them wiping tears. I am moved. I am humbled. I love it here and they do too. One couple speaks and sings, another couple shares their thoughts, children sing and play instruments, a celebration blanket is presented, Scripture is read, stories are told, and the Pastor tells of God's goodness to him and his family. And as we boldly raise our voices in the Doxology, the unity of the body of Christ in strong in this room.

God bless you, Pastor and Mrs. Clarke and family. You reflect God's faithfulness to us. I love you.

I DON'T Want To Smile

I strolled into the kitchen this morning and quickly remembered my dishwasher is broken and we've all been too lazy to take the stinky dishes out and do them by hand. I immediately felt deflated. Not to worry for too long, I was determined to have a good school day and so I gathered my chicks in the school room to get started. Somehow, between the doorbell and poor attitudes and other distractions, we lost it. I decided on an early lunch break but, amidst the preparation, I attempted to make Christmas gifts and time got away on me. Four times today, I tried to upload photos on my computer and someone shut it down to do their own thing. Tears came to my eyes and I sunk into a chair, unable to see past the clutter all around me. On top of it all, I received an email from a friend, struggling in her marriage, that was very discouraging. I began feeling like I was losing control altogether.

My husband arrived in the driveway with one of the tractors. He yelled into the house for me to come and lift him in the bucket up to the roof. He whistled and worked merrily on stringing the Christmas lights along the eaves troughs. His mood bugged me, especially when he noticed my sour expression. So, he called down to me, "Hi Heather!", which is what he calls me when he's being silly... and chipper. I didn't want to smile.

I began to cry out to God after a few hours of this overwhelming cloud of despair. In His grace, He began (gently and slowly) to reveal ways in which I had received negativism in my day, how I accepted defeat. Instead, He wanted me to begin my day with Him, to be filled with His Spirit's contentment first. I blasted my worship music and immediately was uplifted by lyrics that empower the believer to persevere in trials and rest in God. How I ever attempted to face the day without that, I'll never know, and I don't want to try again.

It's nearly dinner and I'm filled with gratitude. I still have dishes, arguing children, and a friend in trouble, but the Lord is shining a light on my next step. The power He has to turn a mind from depressed to joy is only LOVE.

What Breaks The Heart Of God...

He sits behind the glass in bright orange coveralls, holding the black phone to his ear. He's smiling at us but behind his smile are a thousand thoughts and with only twenty allowed minutes, he's itching to get them all out. My mom listens and I watch his moustached mouth moving incessantly. She's whispering a word now and then to keep me part of the conversation. He shifts his weight on the stool and begins gesturing with his hand. He's telling her all about his dog. He's asking her to retrieve the little Jack Russel Terrier from his apartment building superintendent and take care of her until he's out. He misses her terribly and Mom passes the phone to me so he can brag about all the tricks he's taught her. I listen, nodding and smiling. Rosie fetches his glasses, plays dead, can balance a ball on her nose. There's adoration in his voice and I think about what makes a man who's so sensitive and gentle, punch someone in the face.

It's not the first time he's been in here and it's all anger related. But there's a teddy bear deep inside and I am angry at the enemy for prowling in his territory, for taking advantage of a vulnerable and sad little boy, a boy whose mother left him. Now, close to fifty, he doesn't know how to let go of this lifestyle. I hand the phone back to my mom as they work out details and street names. I quickly glance to the left and right at the other inmates--faces also desperate to make time slow for the connection they've been waiting for all week. One visiting woman is crying and just staring through the glass at her loved one. Another brings her baby and holds the pudgy bundle up to the window. Is that Daddy?

I'm snapped back from my thoughts as Mom hands me the phone. Do I have anything I want to say? All I can manage is, "We'll be praying for you." I know it's what he needs more than anything and he drops his head in gratitude. Our time is up and the phone line is cut off. He and Mom, being closer in relationship, hug themselves and point to each other, loving through the barrier. We stand and wave. He's not leaving until we walk away, like catching one last sight of hope on the other side--a picture to carry with him of two people who cared enough to remember him today. I smile one last time and turn toward the locked door.

I had reluctantly come to "visit those in prison" as it is written in Matthew 25. This afternoon was to be company for my mom. I had felt I didn't have time to come but my husband had said I "needed to go", that we all need to experience this. He was right. The atmosphere of this place is humbling. How different am I from this unfortunate man? I too, am a sinner dealing with anger but I can hide it a lot better than he can. Does that make me more righteous in the eyes of a Holy God? Do I break His heart when I do what I know I shouldn't? Mom and I stroll through long corridors and return to the entrance of Maplehurst Prison, pick up our belongings and return our locker key. I speak the Holy Spirit's peace to our friend because His Spirit is resident in me, so I can. I open my heart to God moving me through this experience today. I want to see life through Jesus' eyes. I want to go where He wants me to go, without reluctance. I want to praise Him for the grace that allows me to wake each morning in my own home, regardless of my sin. I want that which breaks His heart, to break mine.

A Couple Of Requests

I pick up the teaspoon and stir the orange pekoe slowly as I listen to little voices drifting in from the living room. I hold the spoon still for a moment, as I realize my husband is doing bedtime prayers with my two middle girls. Molly's voice is soft and she sounds thoughtful but I can only make out a few words; some are about Christmas. She ends with, "And, I'm going to cancel the iPod Touch."

Well, phew! I suppose I can cross that off my list, lol!

Next is Emily, and again, I can only catch bits and pieces. She's thanking God, with fervor, for the coconut I just bought her at the grocery store. She had asked for it for a few weeks and I finally said yes. She was so excited to try something new but being bedtime, we told her she must wait until tomorrow. Then, attached to her gratitude for the tropical delicacy, she adds, "I'm sorry that's it's really not big enough to share with my family."

I peek around the corner and catch my husband's contorted expression. He stops her in her tracks, "Hey! I think you can share your coconut with us."

Emily closes her eyes and continues, with all seriousness, "And, please, help me to get up before seven so Daddy doesn't eat my coconut before he goes to work. Amen."

Who is raising these children anyway? :)
I will be sad when their prayers become less amusing, lol!

Sensing God

We round the bend that takes us to the tree all uprooted and my children go running and I breathe in deeply. I love the smell of Him. Wouldn't the fragrance of what He's created carry the scent of Him? When I catch up to them, they've pulled out the sunflower seeds and I'm giddy as the first birds alight within seconds. I see Him. He's here with us, Immanuel.

We're used to the sweet call of the chickadee but when the nuthatch peeps his gratitude for our gifts, I hear Him. Oh, the birds are all in a bold flutter today! I merely hold out a finger, with no seed to offer, and one lands and grasps it tightly! I can even walk a little before he flies away. And I feel Him. Surely, since the Creator's fingerprint is everywhere, we can know Him by being near to His creation.

I sit my children down on a wooden bench and I'm overwhelmed by the treasures He's uncovered for us on this balmy November day. We must praise Him and so we bow our heads and thank Him that we can truly sense the God of the universe as we walk along a little boardwalk in a small town. And He hears us and is pleased with our acknowledgment of His artistry.

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

Just Like Any Other Day

Most days these children of mine are defending the castle with a sword fight, or flying off of tall towers, or searching for their home as a stray animal. Yesterday was no exception.

And so, even though some kids look forward to picking out a costume at this time of year (and so do mine), for these children, dress-up is part of their lives. Besides a bit of extra sugar, this was like any other day :)

Long Ago They Walked Here

History fascinates me. I hope it's contagious to my children.

We entered the world of the people who lived here long ago and I had to catch my breath for a moment. The foundations of five longhouses were unearthed in this place and reconstructed so we could learn more about the clans that inhabited the very ground we toured.

The little bit that has been revealed to us through archeological discoveries gives us a hint of their way of life but what we know for sure is that they were people God created, just like us. They lived, built, hunted, rocked babies, and shared stories here. With that knowledge in mind, the history of our Canadian Natives becomes a mystery to be unraveled, learned from and enjoyed.

Party Of Six

It's a wonderful number. It gets us the big table in a restaurant, two kids each when we drive separately, perfectly suited to half a dozen of anything. But then... there's that squishing into a hotel room, who gets to go with Daddy here or with Mommy there. Then there's the comments from people in the grocery store, with just a hint of judgment: "My, my, you've got your hands full!" or "Is this your daycare?"

Well, yes, but I don't get paid :)

More often than not, though, passersby marvel at our small crew and respond with amusement. Not that it matters. You see, the more children you have and the more you are together, the easier it all seems. Not that our days go by without a hitch, quite the contrary! We're still sorting out whether our latest disciplinary action took effect, or if we should have allowed that movie, or when is the "right" time to talk about how babies are made. It's a journey and sometimes a tough one, but the ride is so worth it! I praise God for each of our little people who teach us daily about who God is, about who we could be if we trusted enough to let Him handle things, about the fact that these small individuals are on loan to us and we'd better take it all seriously.

Tonight I was repairing one of my children's toys and she was begging me to watch her dance. Without turning toward her, I impatiently retorted, "Can't you see I'm fixing something for you?", like she needed to be thanking me and not be selfish enough to ask anything more of me. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit gave me that little tug, as He often does, and I swung around to catch my girl in a beautifully awkward somersault... and I cheered for her... just in time to not close down a small piece of her heart. I'm learning.

So, even though we fail, we're pretty thankful that God, in His mercy, allows us to keep these kiddos. He never condemns, only corrects. When I feel guilt over my parenting, I know it's not from Him. It's a miracle that we get to wake up and do it all over again... perhaps even a little better today, with His strength.

And as for me and this party of six, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15--paraphrased :)

Godspeed

We laughed and talked as quickly as we could, in between hugs. Her husband sat in the truck, pulled over to the side with their four children, stuff packed around them to the roof. Meg took pictures but with all the rushed goodbyes, this was the best she could get. I love it. This is how we were. If we weren't crying, we were laughing. This woman of God with a powerful love for people, a deep respect for her husband, an adoration for her kids like you've never experienced, a half-full glass view of life, and a brain tumor.

They left for another province last week. I'll miss my friend and neighbour dearly.

Jill, your smile lit up our street, lovely woman. Godspeed to your new home and thank you for all you taught me about life and hope and Jesus' love. Until we fly to meet someday... xo

Carry Your Candle

They risk their health, comfort, family security, and sometimes, their lives to carry food and God's love to the people of this world. On this Missions Sunday, we celebrated all of our missionaries in various countries, and right here in our own city. The children of our church sang about carrying the candle of Jesus' light to those who have no hope.

These little guys thrust their candles out and sing with gusto! They don't fully understand yet, how important the lyrics are but one day, they too will share the love and joy of a great God who has cared for them their whole lives.

Autumn Traditions

Ooey-gooey, dripping caramel sweetness. Sometimes in Autumn, we'd pass by a fairground and my husband and I would pull in just so I could buy a caramel apple. Now that I've found this recipe, making my favourite treat will become a tradition.

I'm concentrating here to be sure my apple is becoming evenly coated with the caramel sauce. That makes all the difference, you know :)

The reactions were hilarious.

The excitement was building.

The final outcome was delicious and I like to think that underneath all of that sweet-once-in-awhile-treat lies a very good fruity excuse for keeping this Autumn tradition :)

Money Management For Kids

It was the first week of school and instead of cracking open the math books, we learned about money through games and recognition practice, counting and ultimately, purchasing at our "store".

During our school time, Oliver is quite into his learning but often wanders over to more important matters :)

A Boy's Prayer

It's simple and it's sweet but I know that I should tell him that God already knows his name. I should probably let this precious boy know that his name is actually written on God's hand and that He knows how many hairs are on my son's head. But he snuggles under the sheets and he closes his eyes. He's my child who is asleep in a minute after the light is out. And so I kiss his soft forehead and remind myself to teach him tomorrow that our great God is thinking about a little boy, all cuddled up in bed, toy cars lined up along his room, Finnigan (his stuffed dog) tucked tightly between his arms, with his Mommy beside him (Psalm 139:17).

I slip into the living room and ponder such profound thoughts.

Perhaps the Lord wanted me to remember these promises tonight.

Happy Thanksgiving (and what ingratitude does to us in North America)

The way they whipped off those "thankfulness flags" easily and in just a few short minutes became my biggest gratitude that day. You see, the Lord has been working in my heart for some time now, about being thankful always, about being content. It's spilling over onto my children and this is becoming a home of praise to God.

However, we're all still a work in progress. And we, who are so pampered in the West, we who truly live like kings and queens (no matter what our financial bottom line) in global comparison, are often so discontent with our lives. We who fill the counselors' rooms in search of why we're so discontent. We who are so "me-centred" that we are too distracted to feed a hungry world. We, who need to "sort out our stuff" before we're "strong" enough to witness to our unsaved neighbours. We who need to get "cleaned up" before we feel worthy of God and His message. We, who are too busy to notice that there are many little things for which to be grateful. Believe me, I'm all for Christians working through tough issues. I've been there myself and the Lord desires to heal broken people. But it can become a distraction from our purpose and often gets dragged out long beyond what it should. The enemy of our souls is still out to kill, steal and destroy and I believe head and heart matters stifle Christians in North America more than anything else.

I read yesterday that less than fifty percent of our area took the opportunity to vote on Thursday. That is a staggering commentary on the ingratitude for our freedom to vote. Will we have to lose before we will wake up to what we should have been grateful for? I for one, lived many years of unthankfulness until I was taken on a journey by God and shown my ugly discontentment. No more! I'm learning to offer my life as a praise in the storms and in the beautiful sunshine. Friends, don't allow this Thanksgiving weekend to be all that fills your heart. Seek to give Him praise in all things, every day. Witness how a life of constant gratitude opens your eyes to the needs of others and finally removes the unhealthy self-focus that plagues us in North America.

Together In The Woods

Dashing from a fallen log to a moth alighting on a rust-coloured leaf to a teddy bear caterpillar to the splashing falls, my children burst through the woods. Nature journals tucked under their arms, they search for extraordinary treasures to sketch. Pencil to paper is frustrating though, as they begin to recognize they aren't the artist that the Creator is. Still I urge them to try and render their best and remember to draw what they really see, not what they think they know about His beauty. Soon they settle and begin and scratch diagrams that will impress this place upon their minds in years to come.

And since a picture is worth a thousand words, be it by pencil or camera, we'll never forget our days together in His woods.

Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.

Two Years Shy Of A Century

She turned 98 this past September and once again we all gathered for the big party--her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. She still has a skip in her step and a keen, sharp mind with a strong memory. Oma whispered to me that she noticed my kids always make her homemade cards. Doesn't every grandmother just love homemade cards?

I had a dream that we rolled in 98 pink, tiered cakes on tables for her birthday, as we sang, and she jumped up and shouted, "Yes!". I couldn't help but wish I could have made her all those cakes but these Dutch chefs in the family set out a wonderful spread anyway :)

May this be your best year yet, Oma.

The Makings Of Laundry Love

No, there was nothing wrong with my washing machine. I read this book, recommended by my sister, and the next day I packed up Laundry Mountain and my children, and headed to the town laundromat. And when I find a good book that inspires me, I do whatever it tells me to.

I had the best help I could possibly ask for as they ran from machine to machine, slipping in coins, changing loads and wheeling the laundry cart around the room.

Complete with a kids' play area and space for drawing and hanging out, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay (escpecially my little photographer daughter). Since folding laundry is actually at the top of my list of household chores, I savoured this time, pressing smooth the sheets and lining up square piles that might otherwise have been quickly corrugated in a haphazard conglomeration. I never did sit even once that day as I raced from van trunk to machine, dragging garbage bags, running home for forgotten fabric softener, switching loads, and then doing it all over again. Just as the book suggested, I set aside a "goodwill bag" and I found my groove with the faint sound of the radio amidst white noise of washers and dryers. With Downy filling my nostrils, I sang along and no one even heard me :)

Yes, we monopolized a whole row of machines :)

Six hours and eight loads later (I know, I know), the tiny, Asian owner, who had kindly guided me along the way, turned off her office lights. I began to panic and collect our last bags when she calmly assured me that the laundromat would stay open long after her work was done. I'm learning :) But the last half of an hour met with the challenge of antsy and hungry-for-supper children. I was proud of them for lasting this long so I rallied the troops to load the van with promises of pizza. They swiftly obliged.

On the way home, we dropped off the large accumulation I had set aside for the goodwill store and I sighed a satisfying sigh at a job well done. I'm thankful for a working washer and dryer but I could get used to this little escape.

Now... to put it all away.

What Kind Of Wife Are You?

It's coming September 30th and we've all been waiting. The movie, Courageous, is finally being released in theatres here in Canada and we're looking forward to the miracles that will undoubtedly occur in men around the country. You see, we women are always looking for a way to slip that book or movie to our husbands. That Scripture verse that reminds them that they're not measuring up in the "Spiritual Headship" department. Perhaps they're mediocre fathers. And they'll come to view this movie, if we can get them out the door, and they will be changed. I'm confident in God's purpose and power in this venue.

But a close friend of mine, who had seen the premiere and raved about it said to me, "Now, who is going to be brave enough to make a movie about bossy and self-righteous wives?!"

We can all step back and take inventory of our wifely character. Some are humble and mature and if you're one of those women, this post isn't for you! (but you would do well to find one of the women I write about and mentor them, please!). If the rest of us are truly honest about how we treat our husbands, what we demand of them and how we fight to prove how right we are, we'll have to admit that every inch of it is sin. Oh, how we want it to be all about them!

I lived with this attitude for many years. At 17 years of marriage, I can say that the Lord has had to discipline me lovingly (albeit the hard way) to become more Christ-like. Man, were they some tough lessons! I praise God that I can stand on the other side of that attitude and recognize the ugliness. Do I fall back into that behaviour and thinking? Yes, sometimes, but I notice it immediately, and if I'm allowing the Holy Spirit to be my guide, I quickly repent and God graciously redeems.

As wives, all we desire is to have loving and fulfilling relationships with our husbands. We desire affection and a feeling of being cherished by them. We want to know they are growing closer to God so that they can lead us in a godly way. Deep down, we don't want to be the boss! Sadly, the very thing we desire, we tear down the possibility with our own hands (Proverbs 14:1). However, past hurts cause us to become control-freaks or, in some cases, we believe we must take over because our husbands are too weak to lead. Obviously, I can't deal with layers of issues in one small post but what I do know is that I've been there and God's grace has set me free! I'm no longer the woman and wife I once was. He can set you free as well and help you to understand your role and how to give your husband to Him to take care of. God desires even more than you to see your husband become the man he's meant to be. My husband can attest to this as well and has been moved incredibly by the Lord, and the change in me made it a whole lot easier for him!

I once heard in a message on marriage that instead of controlling and changing our husbands, our job is to help them hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" Is that your goal today? Or do you behave as though your man was put on this earth to make you happy and secure? What kind of wife are you? May the Lord open your eyes as you seek His face. May He bless you as you allow yourself to be humbled and changed in a powerful and wonderful way that actually works for you so much more than what you're currently experiencing.

The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down. Proverbs 14:1

"Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." Philippians 1:6

So, He started a good work in you but do you feel like a failure? Do you feel like you allowed that great beginning of a new habit or attitude or change to fade away and you're right back at "square one"? I've been there a hundred times. But, as every promise in His Word, He will complete it in us. Tell the Lord "I can't do it, but You can and I believe You will complete it in me." Allow the Holy Spirit to do the work. How often do we claim this Scripture and then strive in our own efforts to do the work? This doesn't mean we should be lazy, it just means we realize how much power we can sanction the One who strengthens us. Will we ever be perfect? Not until the "day of Jesus Christ'", but we can grow in Him until then. Trust again today and lay your need of His change at His feet once more. Let go of your own independent efforts. Now, thank Him that it's complete!

Cousin Connections

They're forging relationships today. They're family--cousins--but to them it's all just fun and games. What I know is that good, long, enjoyable experiences will be in their minds for years to come. I'm counting on it. I've had those moments with cousins too and it's the memories that drive me to create an atmosphere of pleasure and comradery that perpetuates a kind of cousinhood that is gripping in their adult years.

My husband has this desire too. And so we provide opportunities for meaningful connections, whether it be through activities such as dirt-biking and camping, or simply playing house in their bedrooms. Cousins are always welcome. They'll be our children's best and longest friends.

It's Apple Time!

As bitter as the farewell to summer can be for us, we welcome a new season of apple pies, zucchini bread, thick, rich soups, and warmer clothing (yes, my children wear uniforms--it cuts down on the laundry and lessens the morning clothing battle :)

Kid Adventures and Romantic Surprises

My 39th birthday began with a cinnamon toast and fruit breakfast created by my children. I was led like a cowgirl, in my pyjamas to my place at the "saloon" where I read several signs along the way. One in particular stood out to me. It read, "You should see the drinks WE have!" Well! Whoa, is all I could say to that! Where do they get this stuff!? :) They lavished me with gifts that were their very own trinkets from their bedrooms, wrapped in love--and homemade cards. My favourite kind.

Our day continued and we opened our school books.

At noon, my husband came home and announced he was taking me out for lunch. Meg put out sandwich things for her siblings and off I went. Terry drove me to a trail/park outside of town and said he wanted to go for a little walk before lunch. I wondered how much time he had!

The breeze was gentle, the birds sang and grasshoppers jumped across the path. We came upon a shelter along the path and, much to my surprise, there sat my sister-in-law guarding a picnic lunch he had prepared. She hugged me and went back to work. And there, with the picnic was a brand new bike with a big bow and flowers attached. Oh the glee :) After much gushing and hugging and kissing, we sat down and ate our lunch and talked in quiet solitude (rare for us at this time of the day).

Just when I thought my day was memorable, my husband stood, then crept around the side of the shelter and pulled out his own old bike. "Let's go for a ride!" he smiled. Could it get any better?

We rode with the wind in our hair, sometimes racing, sometimes enjoying the scenery. The only shame was that we had to use his Blackberry phone to take photos. If you know me, that is a tragedy. The memory of the moment will last and the phone pics... well, they're adequate :)

Upon arriving back at the shelter, we packed up our lunch and my bouquet and headed home. A glorious birthday it has been. Praise God for his blessings.

Warrior Weekend

It's a guy thing. They go away with a bunch of men and their boys for the weekend... this was the second annual. My boy came home with the warrior name of Nubuck. It has something to do with being the youngest boy but also "made of strong material". Tubing, archery, swimming and campfires, the list goes on as to what they experience together... not to mention, peeing outside the tent and other guy stuff. But the most important thing these boys are picking up is that the men in their lives love Jesus and are training their sons to be strong men of God.

And because this boy's daddy was changed so incredibly by God's love and mercy, Oliver will know all about a big Creator who adores him and has a very special purpose for him.

Never Pass A Lemonade Stand

Someone once said, "Never pass a lemonade stand". I've searched and cannot find the author of this quote but

I love it.

My children begged me to allow them to sell lemonade at the end of the driveway and although they had done it a couple of years ago, I wasn't really in the mood to manage the whole thing. Somehow it happened anyway (ever have those times?) and the purity and sweetness of their activity blew me away. Being just that much older made them independent little entrepreneurs, and as it turned out, I hardly lifted a finger.

When they began to attract several passers-by, I thought it might be a good idea to have a worthy cause for the money, rather than filling their pockets. They agreed, and since we had just viewed photos online of the devastating damage that a tornado had left in a nearby city, we decided to help a family rebuild.

Of course, with $36.63 in the end, it wasn't much of a rebuilding fund, but in this family, we believe in

God's multiplication abilities :)

Hugging Home

We turn into the driveway and my children release a cheer. Jumping from the carseats they've been adhered to for the few hours it takes to return from our vacation spot, they race toward the house. The girls are eager to get inside to maul our long-missed pets but Oliver goes straight for the garage. I grab some loose items from the van and follow them and I notice my boy has attached himself to the brick beside the garage. I stand for a moment staring and finally ask what he's doing with his leg up and his arms wrapped around the corner of the house. He replies, "I'm hugging home, Mommy."

Nine days of glorious family time left us closer to each other and... longing for home. I didn't quite realize how much :)

Peely Eggs and Mud Bikes

He rubs his sleepy eyes and pulls up a stool to the kitchen counter. I ask him what kind of egg he would like this morning and he dozily replies, "Peely egg... no, melty egg, please." I smile and turn to the frying pan to make an egg for my boy that drips just right, not too squishy, not a peely egg, which is hard-boiled. I think about prayer time last night when I stroked his stubbly buzz cut and listened to his words as he began, "Dear Jesus-God-Lord..." I love this boy's terminology for things and I never correct them (although he's quite correct in his prayer address :) I want them to last and last.

A few days ago, my husband took him down to the nursery parking lot and showed him how to ride his two-wheeler, which is a "dirt bike" given by his grandparents. Terry had barely a minute holding onto the back of that seat before that boy took off at high-speed, as though he'd always known how. His face was beaming and he happily declared to me that now he can ride his mud bike :)

Wanna Wiggle My Tooth?

She'd been saying those words for months, thrusting her jaw toward any finger that would oblige. But when that tiny pearl finally broke free from her mouth, Emily was more delighted than I've ever seen her.

Another baby, another milestone. On her way to a full mouth of adult teeth that will change her appearance forever. I'm determined to willingly release this wee one to more delights that mark her journey as signposts in growing up. You go, Girl!

Summer Lovin' and Blog Neglect

Hunting For God

If He is revealed in His creation, surely we'll find Him here.

We closed the science book that educated us about the world's tiniest frogs and set out for the marsh in search for anything special. I always pray for God to uncover some sort of treasure, whether we're shell-hunting at the ocean or picking wildflowers in a field. We'd come here many times before but not with the intent of looking for frogs. What we found thrilled our hearts and caused us to honour our Creator. In a matter of minutes, we discovered three of those full-grown but tiny frogs. There, in a mucky marsh, with the red-winged blackbird singing above our heads and grasshoppers perching on stiff bullrushes, was our real education. He was there with us that day and our treasure revealed a little more of who He is. He desires to make us wonder over His works and draw us to worship Him. And, it's in the searching that we find Him.

A Reason To Dance

We find our way to our seats in the dimly lit auditorium, wave to a few familiar faces and open our program. How many years have we done this now? Nine? Ten? I sit low and heavy in my flip-down theatre chair and sigh a good, long satisfied sigh. We made it. Another recital, another year over. Now it is time to relax and enjoy the fruit of our daughter's labour and our hard-earned money.

I'm taking pictures but still I gaze adoringly at the once chubby arms, now long and lean, stretching with gentle elegance. She and her fellow dancers are trained to smile but there's something behind hers that denotes more than just obedience. She's right where she wants to be. The stage, the costume, the dance, this is where her mind takes her on days that are long and weary. I had become cross with her a few times this year when she forgot her dance bag or when she was late again and made us all wait in the van. But as she glides across the stage, spinning and then poised just so, I am overwhelmed by the shear blessing of being able to provide this path for our daughter and the rest melts away.

We go for ice cream later and we hang up the tu-tu for the summer. It's June again and I don't know how we got here or how she grew into a ballerina. It all feels like we were just laughing and twirling together in the living room, pretending she was a "real" dancer. My husband and I have always told this girl that we pray she would use her gifts for the Lord, who gave her the ability in the first place. We're beginning to see this come to fruition as she would wake up the next morning and perform a worship dance for Father's Day in our church. And as our girl grows in her physical skills, we are ever aware that her spiritual connection to her heavenly Father is growing as well. Joining the two is honouring her Creator. And that is a very good reason to dance.

A Man Who Leads

We're clamouring over steep rocks at the end of the trail and all the while my little boy is warning his sisters to be careful. He's telling them, "Hold onto the branches and don't slip", and "I'm okay, Mommy, you don't need to hold onto me." When we finally reach the end, the girls beat him to the path and begin to run. My desperate boy cries out, "Wait! I want to lead!" I have to call them back and as he runs ahead I give a quick explanation. I tell them that their four year-old brother is beginning to sense his God-given responsibility to take care of the girls in his life and that we should allow him opportunity to do that. I tell them it's good for them to lead too, in different areas of their lives, but with him being younger than all of them, we must look for times we can let him practice. A competitive spirit is not the same but it's pretty obvious to all of us he's feeling like a protector today.

Why is my son eager to lead his much older sisters? Because he watches his Daddy. My husband leads our family as a man of integrity. He loves to involve our children in his activities from fixing something to gardening to golf. He trains them by teaching them things step by step or by disciplining them. They feel secure in his love and in the boundaries he's set for them. His girls know they're protected and his son recognizes that one day this same role will be his.

On this Father's Day, I honour my husband who leads me to be a better wife and mother. And as the words of the song below state, you do lead us with strong hands. And it's all because you rely on your Heavenly Father for your strength.
